It is a plant of African origin, of which the leaves are used; from their external part is extracted a juice, rich in anthraquinone glycosides, especially aloin and barbaloin. It has a laxative effect. It stimulates peristaltic movements and decreases water absorption in the colon, supporting evacuation. The use under 12 years of age, during pregnancy or breastfeeding is not recommended.
