The fruit contains essential oils, flavonoids and glycosides. It is a female sedative that has a progestin-like and hormonal balancing action. It is useful for reducing the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, for relieving menstrual cycle disorders and its regularization, and for relieving menopausal discomfort, especially mood swings, hot flashes, and anxious syndromes.
Numerous studies have attested its effectiveness in premenstrual syndrome and related hyperprolactinemia, with a decrease in all associated symptoms, both psychosomatic ones such as anxiety, stress, irritability, sleep alteration, both physical ones such as pain and tension in the breast, swelling, headache, myalgia and asthenia.
Probably its pharmacological action, as in many other plants, is due to the synergy between several elements present in the phytocomplex that interact at different receptor levels. The extract has been shown to balance both estrogen and progesterone levels.
