The zeaxanthin is an eye pigment from the family of the carotenoids, located in the central area of the retina, the macula, responsible for the distinct vision. Its main function is to absorb and shield the light radiation before it reaches the oxidizable substrates in the photoreceptors and in the pigment epithelium, and therefore protect the retina from the negative effect of the light radiation. Clinical studies highlighted that both the zeaxanthin and the lutein protect from the onset of sight degenerations due to aging, such as cataract and macular degeneration.
