It is a plant native of Asia; its roots, used in phytotherapy, are rich in anthraquinone glycosides (the main one is the rein) and in tannins. In small doses, it is used for its astringent, bitter, tonic and digestive properties. It increases the secretion of stomach acids and the excretion of bile from the liver. At higher doses it has laxative properties. It stimulates the intestinal peristaltic movements and reduces the absorption of water in the colon, favoring the evacuation. Its use is not recommended under 12 years of age, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
